I’ve been thinking a lot about where I find my identity, especially when things get chaotic or hard in my life. Because how I react to those times directly relates to where my identity is rooted. I read this scripture the other day and all of a sudden it took on new life for me:
“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” -Colossians 1:17
Then in my daily devotional time I read this statement from Well-Watered Women: The World does not revolve around you. It revolves around God. You do not hold all things together, God does. Wow!
That puts things in perspective. Since I am not God, I am not required to hold everything together…He does that.
The key part of this whole line of thinking is the part of Colossians 1:17 where it say “IN Him all things hold together.” The little two letter word, IN is actually huge! When my identity is found IN Him, when I am rooted IN Him then all things hold together.
So, the daily walking with Him becomes much more important to me. Because the only way to be found IN Him is to walk WITH Him and when those two things are in line I begin to look like Him. This is the place where my identity should begin and end…IN HIM! The pressure of trying to be all things to all people lessens when I am focused only on HIM being everything I need! My identity becomes the overflow of that singular focus. The honest part is…its a journey. Its an everyday struggle to stay focused on Him, to dwell IN Him. The daily prayer becomes: Lord, bind my wandering heart to thee. On those days when I feel I’ve lost my ID, the place I go to must be IN HIM!
